WAHO, Cape Verde discuss New Cooperation Models towards Health Improvement

The West African Health Organization (WAHO) is in talks with the Ministry of Health in Cape Verde to identify ways to strengthen cooperations and explore new models towards health improvement in the country and the sub-region.

The discussions began when Dr Xavier Crespin, Director General of WAHO met with the country’s Prime Minister, Dr. Ulisses Correia and the Minister of Health and Social Security, Dr. Arlindo do Rosário last Monday (13th February 2017) to begin an official five days working visit.

Dr Crespin in a press briefing after the meetings to officially commence his visit acknowledged that, both meetings were enough to provide him with relevant issues towards strenghtening cooperation between the ECOWAS health body and the Ministry of Health and Social Security.

In turn, the Minister of Health and Social Security said that the meeting also served to define the next steps to be taken in the area of ​​strengthening health systems.

Disaster Preparedness and Management Initiative

At the opening ceremony of the training in disaster preparedness and management in West Africa, which is taking place in the country’s capital, Praia, the Dr Crespin stated that WAHO will continue to support the country in combating the different issues related to Response plans to epidemics such as Ebola, and Zika ; an outbreak situation the country first reported and controlled about some two years ago.

At the end of the day, Dr. Xavier Crespin, visited the Dr. Agostinho Neto Hospital, accompanied by the General Director and Clinical Director, where, in addition to visiting the facilities of the Praia Telemedicine Center, he learned about the operation of the various Structure.

The meetings were held with heads of different services of the Ministry of Health, with the representative of the World Health Organization, Dr. Mariano Castellon and the Executive Director of the ECOWAS Delegation in Cape Verde, Dr. Mahama Kappiah.
